What You Should Know about CompTIA Security+ Certification

Working in IT Security

Working in IT SecurityPhilosopher and author Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” He probably never imagined that knowledge in the form of digital information would ever be as readily available as it is now.

However, the problem is making sure private information stays private. That is not easy today, and it just keeps getting harder. If you want to work on IT security, CertBlaster says that you will need to up your game with CompTIA Security+ certification. A security plus practice exam will show you the standards you need to reach.

Why Get Certification?

Anyone can get information about anything and anybody with a few clicks. That’s a good thing if you want to get a cake recipe or find the nearest plumber, but easy access can be a bad thing. People can hack into your accounts and steal your money or identity without good IT security. This is the reason there’s so much demand for security IT professionals.

However, a good company will not hire just anyone. You have to show that you’re up to the challenge by passing the CompTIA Security+ certification exam. This is an international standard for IT security competence developed in 2002. Without it, you will not get far in the security IT field.

What Does the Exam Do?

The exam will test if you are familiar with current problems with IT security in general. It updates every three years because the challenges to IT security are also changing. The latest version of the exam is the SY0-401, released in May 2014. It has a maximum of 90 multiple choice and essay items. The passing score is 750 out of a possible 900 points. The exam fee is $320, so it’s practical to take a practice exam to increase your chances of passing.

Is it Worth the Trouble?

It’s definitely worth it. With Security+ certification, you can expect to earn about $75,000 a year in the U.S. You aren’t limited to just the U.S., though. You can get a job with good companies in any country you want. From there, the world is your oyster. Once you get your foot in the door, you can get better at your job, making you more valuable as a security IT professional.

You do not need security plus certification to work in the security IT field. However, you have limited career opportunities and growth without it. If you want success in your security IT, it is best to start on the right foot in the doors that count. A security plus practice exam can help get you there.
